Company Profile

Mvc-013s.jpg (26489 bytes)The Dragon Institute was founded in 1992 by Daniel Pagan in Boonton, New Jersey. The original curriculum was a modified form of WTF Tae Kwon Do.  Modified in the respect that not only were WTF Palgue Hyungs taught, but also were the USTU Tae Geuk Hyungs.   In addition to this was the added possibility of "failing" a test (ironically, this is something that is almost never heard of in most schools).

As a School owner, Dan was introduced to many other instructors from other schools and was exposed to many other forms of martial arts.  After being taught the rudimentary basics of the Jujitsu, Dan realized the close-quarter ineffectiveness of Tae Kwon Do and immediately immersed himself into the study of the close-quarter arts, in particular were Aikijujitsu, Vee Arnis Jitsu and Hapkido.  In addition to this, his introduction to Vee Arnis Jitsu exposed the need for cross-training with weapons and realistic streetfighting tactics.

Being committed to bringing the best he can to his students, Dan integrated many other techniques and drills to his students to fill the need for close-quarters combat and weapons training.  Realizing this was not "pure" Tae Kwon Do, but it still being the core art of the school, the Dragon Institute broke from tradition and coined the term for the curriculum as "Combative Tae Kwon Do".

In 1995, the Ultimate Fighting Championship made it's historical debut and changed the world's view of martial arts forever.  It was at this time that the Dragon Institute realized the effectiveness of the "grappling" arts and thus came our journey of pursuing knowledge of this powerful tactic.  At this time, Hyungs (forms) and belts took a back seat to realistic training and Tae Kwon Do was replaced with Kickboxing for primary stand-up training.

Students were now training in stand-up (striking), close-quarters, grappling, and weapons (stick and knife).  Drawing from many different styles, 4 Range Combat was used to label our system of training and preparing for combat.

Thus 4 Range Combat (4RC), the system of training developed by the Dragon Institute, was born.  We have always maintained that 4RC is not a style, but a means of training and preparation.  Students were truly "free of style" and encouraged to develop themselves as individual martial artists.  In addition, students were encouraged to study other forms of fighting and use the school as a forum for testing what they learned.

Currently, our instructors and students are engaged in studying other forms of martial arts and seeking certifications with the hopes of teaching full curriculums in arts such as Brazilian Jujitsu, Jeet Kune Do, the Filipino Martial Arts, and Muay Thai.
